– a moment of realisation, change and/or disruption
The period spent in Biella was for me a moment of change: the initial idea of making a project through the use of images taken from public surveillance cameras, only by obesving and selecting them, turned into a performance that took place in real.

– a moment of connection

Together with Tizo All we decided to connect our practices, which are very far from each other. The body action of Tizo became a way to intervene directly in a public space, altering the daily life of an impersonal place such as a public parking lot. At the same time, it was possible to attend the performance through a live webcam available on the web. The real body movements and the electronic immateriality of the surveillance camera turned into two sides of the same coin.

– any tools / methods / resources to share
The observation of the public surveillance cameras is a solitary process, in contrast with the sentiment of collaboration of the residence. Intervening directly on the site arises a dialogue with citizens and with the people connected to the online page of the webcam. The “solitary process” became a “collaboration process”.

– a question you are left with
Now that all the events, recidencies and many jobs had moved online, our life seems more and more dependent on the immaterial online space. Nevertheless, we don't have to forget that even internet is something that requires a lot of phisycal space: all the cables under the oceans, all the huge hidden buildings containing thousands of servers, working the all day, producing a huge amount of pollution. We don't have to forget that all the technologies are not invincible, they have many limits. I wonder if one of these limits consist in the impossibility to create a deep human relationship, filtered by a screen.

– something you will carry forward
The intervention was made by two main elements: body movement and lights. As soon as evening comes and the light falls below a certain degree of intensity, the webcam image turns automatically into black and white. Then I pointed my light towards the webcam in order to make the image colorful again. What I will carry foward is the experimentation with the limits of the technology tools, in particular of the surveillance cameras.

di

Biase
For my action research project I would like to investigate not a specific place but different places around the world through the eyes of the public surveillance cameras. Aseptic shots, total fields and mechanical movements: a form of control over atmospheric agents, over population movements, over the secret life of animals. What interested me are those moments where the cameras are subjected to external influences (fog, thunders, wind, etc) nullifying the control purposes. The images that emerge from these moments are totally unexpected and recall different collective imaginaries: paintings of the 1700s, extracts of analogue experimentations of the underground cinema of the 60s, futuristic views like Blade Runner. Abstract and pictorial landscapes, defined by the “pigment” of the pixels and by digital artifices. From this concept comes the title un/Hook: unhooking, or freeing the image from its original function, dragging the viewer into a new and unknown path, between forms and collective imaginaries estranged in a dream dimension.
